1-26-2012 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha

The 1-26-2012 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and a song.

Prayer concerns include Jerry Mottinger and Bill and Janice McVey.

President Michael Oberlender announced that a 10K has been added to this year's Rotary Run. That means all hands need to be on deck that day to help stage this expanded event. Mark your calendars for May 19 as the day to be at Shannon Spring Park for the Rotary Run and later that day for the Shrimp Boil.

Rotarian of the Day was Rod Hopper who introduced Cova Williams of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan.

Cova told Rotarians about a unique program that the Center started for scouts that allows them to ride a stretch of the Chisholm Trail.

She said the Center has a "steady flow" of foreigners who want to more about the American Cowboy.

Some of the upcoming events at the Center include this weekend's Trail Dance Film Festival, which features filmmakers from all over the county and the Western Spirit Celebration in September.

Cova asked the Rotarians a few trivia questions about the Chisholm Trail, including

how much a cowboy earned. Answer: About $1 a day.

Another question is how Jessie Chisholm. Charlie Burrus had the answer. Chisholm died from eating tainted bear meat.

Cova said a historical marker has been placed every mile along the Chisholm Trail.

She encouraged Rotarians to go to the center's website and register to receive its newsletter.

President Michael reminded Rotarians that the 2-1meeting will host Sen. Ron Justice and Rep. Joe Dorman, who will preview the upcoming legislative session.

The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way test.
