2-7-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha

The Feb. 7, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and a song.

Guests included Dick Lowe, Tanner Tibbetts and Blake White.

John Allen was introduced as a prospective member. President Cody White said an orientation session will be held quarterly for new members.

President Cody announced that the board would meeting on Friday, 2-8-2013.

Other announcements:

-- Tickets to he Boy Scouts annual Pancake Breakfast on March 2 can be purchased for $5 from Blake White.

--Tickets are also available for the Friends of the Library Valentine Chocolate Celebration.. Mark Tibbetts has tickets for $6.

-- Name tags have been reorganized. Check the sign in sheet for your number and locate your badge in the box by that number.

Jerry Pittman was Rotarian of the Day. He introduced Chickasha Chamber of Commerce board member Sam Griffin as our guest speaker.

Sam talked about two new community events planned for the Chickasha this year sponsored by the Chamber.

The most immediate is an appearance by the Harlem Ambassadors, a group of college graduates who play basketball and deliver a message to students to stay in school and stay off drugs.

The Ambassadors will play a team of local dignitaries and serious basketball players on April 23 at the CHS activity center. The serious players on the Chickasha Breeze will be on the court the 1st and 3rd quarters and the "B" team will play the 3rd and 4th quarters and will be subjected to the antics of the Ambassadors.

Several Rotarians are on the Breeze, incuding Ron Sanders, Hank Ross, Greg Elliott and Stewart Fairburn.

Tickets are on sale for $11 for adults and $6 for youngsters. Civic clubs can get a block of tickets to sell and keep $1 for each ticket sold as a fundraiser.

Sponsorships are available to help bring the Ambassadors to town. In addition to the game, they will do an assembly in the Bill Wallace gym for students at BWECC and Grand Elementary.

You can be the title sponsor for the game for $2000, an event sponsor for $500 and a player sponsor for $250. Proceeds from the game will go to fund various local projects.

Griffin also talked about the Ride the Rock bike ride on Sept. 21 that will include a 10K ride, a 33k ride and 61k ride. The bike ride will begin that Saturday morning at the Rock Island Depot in downtown Chickasha.

Sam had posters from both events for Rotarians to post at their places of business.
