Grady Memorial Hospital CEO Kean Spellman was guest speaker at the 3-27-14 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha.
The March 27, 2014 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and song.
President-elect Kory Kirkland once again presided over the meeting in absence of a vacationing President Greg Elliott.
Our guest speaker was Kean Spellman, CEO of Grady Memorial Hospital, who updated us on developments in the medical community in Chickasha.
He said the hospital is aggressively recruiting new physicians with a rural background who will feel comfortable living in Chickasha.
A new orthopedic surgeon has been hired and will begin work in April
New docs are needed to replace retiring physicians. He is working with city officials and buildings to develop a plan to have adequate housing for any new doctors.
In an effort to steer students toward a medical career and returning home to practice, the hospital has a program for high school volunteers to shadow doctors, a program for students to get work experience during the summer and a program for tuition forgiveness if they return here to practice.
He said he hospital finished the year in the red but so far in 2014 it is in the black.
Obamacare has meant a reduction in medicare payments of more than $1.2 million for the hospital.
He said GMH and Southern Plains have begun working together to be more fiscally efficient.
The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
