Brenda Short from the Women's Care and Pregnancy Center was guest speaker at the 3-28-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha.
The March 28, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and a song.
Guests included John Gorton.
Prayer concerns included the McVeys and Nancy Smith and the Brooks Family after the death of family patriarch Curtis Brooks.
Bill McVey read a letter to club about a war-effort donation made in December 1942.
President Cody White read a thank you note from the Chickasha High School Robotics regarding the club's $500 donation.
Brad Duval has begun soliciting sponsorships for the May 18 Rotary Run. He passed a sign up sheet around that included the amounts given last year.
Rotarian of the Day Charlie Burrus introduced Brenda Short, executive director of the Women's Care and Pregnancy Center, as our speaker.
Brenda said the center is a pro-life ministry, which gives women options when faced with pregnancy.
• Carry and parent.
• Carry and place the child for adoption
• Terminate the pregnancy, which the faith-based organization does not advocate.
"If they right with God, they will make the right decision for the baby," Short said. Last year, 16 made professions of faith at the center.
The center offers pre-natal and parenting classes and can earn "pregnancy bucks" to get baby supplies such as diapers and car seats. Single parents can attend life skills classes.
Short said that 334 women came to the center last year for 751 total visits. She 58 births were reported.
The center is a 501-3c non-profit and is sustained solely by donations.
"Every donation goes into the general fund," Short said.
Administrative costs are kept a minimum with only three paid employees -- the director, an office manager and nurse, who conducts ultra sounds.
The rest of the work is performed by volunteers. Short said the center is always looking for volunteers and people to serve on the board.
The center's annual banquet is the major fundraiser and in June a golf tournament will be held at Winter Creek Golf Club to raise additional money.
The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
