4-10-2014 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha

The April 10, 2014 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and song.
Prayer concerns include the family of Dr. John Minnette who passed away over the weekend. Joys include Jason Jarnigan, who became a grandfather and Peggy Boldt, who learned her book will soon be published.
President Greg reminds all Rotarians that the District 5770 conference is the weekend of May 2-4 in Medicine Park.
Jeff Willoughby of Union Hill Electric Co. was our program. He talked about electricity and electric motors.
Electricity traces back to 1820 wan Hans Christian Orsted created an electric current hen experimenting with a magnet and coils.
Through the years, others like Andre-Marie Ampere and Georg Ohm further advanced the study of electricity. What was known about electricity and how it could be used continued to evolve. It was not until the 1940s that much of rural America got electricity.
Willoughby explained the difference between AC and DC current.
In alternating current (AC) the flow of electric charge periodically reverses direction. In direct current (DC) the flow of electric charge is only in one direction.
He showed us several small electric motors and explained how they worked. Willoughby said the most common reason for motor failure is mechanical and stressed the need for proper maintenance.
He said you have to extremely careful when working with electricity and talked about the importance of insulation, which contains the current. He said electricity is always trying to "get out" and if it has to go through you to get to the ground it will.
The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
