4-17-2014 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha

The April 17, 2014 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a pledge, prayer and a song.
Guests included Elizabeth Pittman.
Sunshine report included prayer concerns for Michael Oberlender and his injured back.

Amy Sutton was Rotarian of the Day and ended up presenting the program when her father, the scheduled speaker had to cancel.
The topic was Serindipity of Discovery. Amy tolds us about the many significant breakthroughs discovered basically by accident.
Some the examples she gave include:
-- Gravity. Sir Isaac Newton figure out the Law of Gravitational Pull after seeing a apple fall from a tree.
-- Coca Cola. Pharmacist John Pemberton mixed coca with carbonation while trying to create a painkiller.
-- Penicillin. Alexander Fleming discovered the powerful antibiotic when one of his petri dishes was contaminated by mold.
-- Vulcanized rubber. Charles Goodyear's study of what heat had done to rubber led to a stronger production through a process known as vulcanization.
The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
