OSU Extension Service ag educator Brook Bradbury was guest speaker at the 5-2-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha.
The May 2, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and song.
Guests included Kean Spellman and Therese Evans.
Prayer concerns are Ann Manchester, Nadine Allen and Jim & John Allen
Kory Kirkland made a plea for volunteers for the May 18 Rotary Run. All hands need to be on had to make the race a success. A sign up sheet was circulated for various assignments.
President Cody White said the club was to be recognized at this weekend's district convention for its membership efforts. The district meeting is being held in Norman.
Rotarian of the Day was Gary McNatt, who introduced ag educator Brook Bradbury of the OSU Extension Service as our guest speaker.
The agriculture acreage in Grady County is 34 percent crops and 60 percent pasture. Only about six percent is incorporated land. Only about 8,500 acres of crop land is irrigated making the area susceptible to suffering during drought conditions.
Brook reported that the average family farm is about 329 acres. She said Grady County ranks No. 1 in the state in Alfalfa production and in dairy cattle. The county is 5th in overall cattle production and in hog production.
Drought conditions over the past years have hit 100 percent of the county. The loss to farmers were $239 in crops and $157 million in livestock.
Recent hail caused about a 20 percent reduction in the area's wheat crop and the predicted freeze tonight and Friday morning could impact the crop even further.
She said recent rain has help ease the drought conditions and will continue to improve over the summer. She said he remains to be seen if the drought cycle has been broker of if this is just a temporary relief.
The meeting adjourned after the recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
