5-23-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha
John Lovett, curator of the Western Histories collection at the University of Oklahoma Library was guest speaker of the 5-23-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha. Among the photos who showed was this one from 1889 Land Run. The May 23, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and song.
Guests included Levi Langley, Laurie Irvine and Tanner Tibbetts.
Prayer concerns included Ann Manchester. A special moment of silence was held to pray for those affected by the tornadoes earlier in the week. Several club members new families displaced by the storms.
President Cody White and Vice-President Kory Kirkland reported that the Rotary Run was a huge success with 165 participants. Two club members completed the 10K route -- Brad Duval and Jim (Auto) Allen. Cody and Kory both thanked all the members who helped with the run. They singled out Brad Duval for his recruitment of race sponsors. Kory said a few t-shirts remain and are available for $6 each.
Cody passed out a letter explaining a campaign to raise money for the Rotary Foundation as well as recognizing incoming Rotary International President Ron Burton of Norman.
Dwayne Jones and Eddie Adamson as prospective members. Dwayne is a former member and Eddie is the new Chickasha Chief of Police and was a Rotarian in Guymon, OK.
Rotarian of the Day was Ed Chamberlain. He introduced John Lovett, curator of the OU Library Western Histories collection.
The Western Histories collection encompasses diverse research materials to all aspects of history and life in the American West with special emphasis on Oklahoma, the Southwest and Native Americans.
The collection has more than 2 million photos and vintage posters, featuring the work of some of the most noted photographers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection is open for viewing from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. at Monnet Hall, 630 Parrington Oval, Rm 452, on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
During his presentation to Rotarians, Lovett showed and explained the significance of about 65 photos, including an iconic photo from the Land Run of 1889.
The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
