Oklahoma Assistant Attorney General Lesley March was guest speaker at the 7-11-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha.
The July 11, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha open with a prayer, pledge and song.
It was the first meeting of the new Rotary Year because last week was the 4th of July Holiday.
Newly installed President Greg Elliott started his tenure by being absent with Past President Cody White standing in.
Guests included Lillie Oberlender.
Prayer concerns were expressed for Jim (TV) Allen's mother.
Rotarian of the Day was Bret Burns who introduced former Assistant District Attorney and current Assistant Attorney General Lesley March as our guest speaker.
Lesley heads the AG's Victim Services Unit, which serves as a advocate for crime victims.
Other divisions of the Attorney General's office include criminal appeals, general counsel, litigation, medicaid fraud, multi-county grand jury, public protection and Workers Comp fraud.
The Victim Services Unit handles certification of domestic violence, sexual assault and batterers intervention programs.
It also works with victims of human trafficking, which March said is a growing problem in Oklahoma. A of gangs are involved in human trafficking She said victims of this crime are different that domestic violence and special facility -- Day Spring -- has been established to help these victims.
Her office also handles notifications to victims of the status of the perpetrator in the court process, parole hearings, release dates and in some cases, execution dates.
March said she has witnessed eight executions over the past two years.
Victims can also register for OK VINE --Oklahoma's Victim Information and Notification Everyday service, which is a criminal tracking system and automatically notifies victims when an offenders custody status changes. You can learn more about this system by going to www.vinelink.com
March and her staff also do training for CLEET and other law enforcement groups on victims rights.
