Guest speaker at the 8-16-2012 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha was Chickasha High School Football Coach Tom Cobble.
The Aug. 16, 2012 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with prayer, pledge and song.
Guests included Evan Blasingame and Chuck Larsen.
Prayer concerns include Bill and Janice McVey and Julius and Ann Haralson.
Congratulations to Tom Rose upon his selection as interim Economic Development Director for Chickasha while the search continues for a permanent EDC leader.
President Cody White announced a blue-light special on Rotary Run T-Shirt. Take a shirt, or two, or three and give a donation.
Cody also reminded Rotarians about the September special where all Rotary Foundation donations will be match with points, dollar for dollars. The club has a max of 3,400 to use. This is a good way to accelerate your path to becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.
The district governor is encouraging Rotarians to consider making the trip next summer to Lisbon, Portugal for the installation of Ron Burton of Norman as the RI President for 2013-2014.
The club is also asked to seek non-Rotarian nominees for a group study exchange with Tuscany, Italy and consider hosting the exchange group her in Chickasha.
Mitch Williams, a flight instructor and owner of Chickasha Wings, is the newest member of the Rotary Club of Chickasha. He was sponsored by David Sikes. Mitch, after getting his Rotary pin, gave the longest post induction speech in recent memory.
The club's Freshman Project starts again on Friday. Rotarians are asked to greet freshmen students at Chickasha High School ever Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:45 as they arrive at school. Contact Bill McVey and/or Chris Mosley is you can assist.
Rotarian of the Day was Bob Hayes, who introduced CHS football coach Tom Cobble as our speaker.
Coach Cobble is in the second year of his second stint as head coach in Chickasha. He previously has coached at Weatherford, Minco, Enid and El Reno.
The Chicks return 7 starters on offense and 9 on defense this season. Coach Cobble said the 2012 schedule is "tougher" than last year when CHS went 5-5.
The Chicks, who compete in District 5A-1, are the smallest 5A school in the state.
The season opener is Aug. 31 against arch rival Anadarko. Homecoming is Sept. against Cache and the district opener is Sept. 21 at Altus. New to the district this year are Del City and Southeast.
Cobble said the team has a very productive "Summer Pride" conditioning program that concluded with a "Survivor" night that end with a run up and down Mt. Scott.
More than 50 players are on the roster, up considerably from a year ago. The Chicks have some new faces on the coaching staff, included two who will work with the 9th grade team, which has a roster of 28 players.
Cobble said the goal this year is to make the playoffs.
"The ultimate goal is to get to the playoffs," he said. "You can't win a state championship if you don't make the playoffs."
Players to watch in 2012 include linebacker T.J. Filer, lineman Jacoby Davis and the quarterback duo of Brandon Wright and Cade Morris.
"This is the best two-man quarterback race I've ever been involved with," the coach said.
Coach said the teams needs to develop a big-time running back. Right now, coach said it was "running back by committee."
Cobble said the team "needs to learn how to finish games." That will be especially important in district, which Cobble said is one of the toughest in the state.
