OSBI Director Stan Florence, former Grady County Sheriff, was guest speaker at the 8-22-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha.
The Aug. 22 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and song.
Guests included Lee Savage and Courtney Seiss.
The Sunshine report included one Joy -- Jason Jarnigan is about to become a grandfather.
President Greg Elliott announced that District has awarded the club a $4,000 grant to go along with $1,000 from the club to buy iPads and a mobile iPad charging station for a new program at Bill Wallace Early Childhood Center.
Birthdays include Cyristie Shebester. Anniversaries include David Hall, John Grote and Jerry Pittman.
Rotarian of the Day was Tim Brauer, who introduced former Grady County Sheriff and current Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Director Stan Florence.
Florence the creation of the OSBI traces back to the mid 1920s when about the only law enforcement other than local sheriff's and police officers was a band of deputy U.S. Marshals that included Chris Madison, Bill Tillman and Hack Thomas.
Crime as rampant during the era. In 1924 alone, there were more than 250 bank robberies in Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Identification and Investigation was formed in 1925 and in three years had reduced the number of bank robberies in Oklahoma from 253 to six.
Florence said the agency's mission has remained the same for almost 90 years -- to serve local law enforcement agencies.
OSBI has grown from a staff of seven in 1925 to more than 350 employees statewide today. There are four division under the OSBI umbrella: investigations, criminalistics, administration and information services.
Florence said the OSBI has attained the highest level of accreditation a law enforcement agency can receive.
"It is important to meet those high standards to maintain the public's trust," Florence said.
The OSBI director was once a political appointment but since 1976 has been hired by a commission, free from political influence.
The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
