President Greg Elliott bestows Rotary Paul Harris Fellow honors on Rotarian Crystie Shebester.The Sept. 5, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge, song and NO FOOD!
A hungry group of Rotarians joined song leader Mitch Williams in a local rendition of Merle Haggard's "Working Man Blues" in tribute to Labor Day earlier in the week.
President Greg Elliott tried to read a list of birthday's and anniversaries but most of them were wrong so he gave up.
Crystie Shebester was awarded her pin and certificate for becoming the club's latest Paul Harris fellow for contributions to the Rotary Foundation.
Food finally arrived and the meeting recessed a few minutes to eat.
Rotarian Day of the was multi-Paul Harris Fellow Elmer Kuntz who introduced multi-Paul Harris Fellow Glenda Thomas of the Sooner Rotary Club, who is the District 5770 Rotary Foundation Chairman.
Glenda said the Rotary Foundation is changing the world by education and improving poverty.
The goal of Rotary International President Ron Burton is Every Rotarian, Every Year
or $100 given to the foundation each year by each member.
The Foundation has helped eradicate polio in all but three or nations, supplying more than $2 billion since 1985.
But a lot of the money we donate comes back home. In 2011, District 5770 Rotarians contributed more than $115,000 to the foundation. After drawing interest for 3 years, half of that money comes back to the district.
Half of that is used for local club projects, with the club matching at least 20 percent of the grant. The Chickasha Club was awarded $4,000 and added another $1000 for a mobile iPad charging station and and iPads for Bill Wallace Early Childhood Center.
The other half is used for club initiated global projects. The criteria for determining how that money will be used is being formulated. Stay tuned.
Contributions totaling $1,000 make you a Paul Harris Fellow. Bling is added to your pin for every additional $1,000 you give. Elmer and Glenda have a lot of bling.
You can be a Rotary Benefactor for remembering the Foundation in your will.
A $10,000 donation makes you a member of the Bequest Society.
