May 19 Rotary Run features 10K, 5K, fun run

The annual Chickasha Rotary Run has expanded to attract more participants this year.

In addition to the traditional 5K run, a 10K run is planned as well as a one mile fun run.

The runs start Saturday, May 19 from Chickasha's Shannon Springs Park at 8 a.m.

"The 10K is something that is more popular for these type of runs," race director Cody White said. "People are running more, so we wanted to expand it." 

White said last year's 5K had 153 runners. With the 10K and one mile fun, he expects that number to grow.

"We are preparing for 200 and hopefully for as many as 250," he said.

Early registration is due by May 17 and can be mailed to Rotary Run, P.O. Box 115, Chickasha, OK 73023 or completed online at chickasharotaryrun.org. Early entry fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt or $15 without a shirt. 

Entries will be accepted on the day of the run for a $25 fee and includes a t-shirt as available.

Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 19.

The race begins on the east side of Shannon Springs Park and winds through the park to the west and into several neighborhoods, along the north side of Cottonwood Creek Golf Club and then east, back to the park.

The 10K race includes a scenic route through the golf course. The one mile fun run will utilize existing paths around the park. Strollers are welcome in the fun run.

White said there would be traffic control at intersections, water stations at half-way point and finish line, medical personnel on the course and complimentary fresh fruit at the finish.

The event is sanctioned by the USATF and the 5K and 10K courses have been certified by the USATF.

Runners in the 5K and 10K races will be competing for $1,000 in cash prizes for both male and female athletes. First place winners get $125, second place, $75 and third, $50.

More than 600 in merchant prizes will also be given, starting with fourth place.

Age groups are 12 and under, 13-15, 16-18 and five-year age increments through age 65 and over for women and 70 and over for men. Medals will be given in age group.

There will be a corporate challenge with teams competing for the traveling trophy.

The races are being co-ordinated by Breakaway Facing with results immediately available after completion of the races.

Several area businesses have stepped up to help support the run, including Platinum sponsor Waste Connections.

"We are proud to have the opportunity the support the Chickasha Rotary Club by sponsoring the run and be a true example of service above self," said Steven Clark of Waste Connections.

All proceeds from the race will go to benefit local charities.
