12-22-2011 meeting of the Rotary Club Chickasha

The Dec. 22, 2011 meeting of the Rotary Club Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and songs.

Two new members purposed:  Mark Millsap and Crystal Shebester.

President Michael Oberlender read a  Thank You note from Hungry Kids Team of Pioneer PTO for the club's donation.

The following slate of officers was elected: President: Cody White;  President Elect:  Greg Elliott; Vice President:  Kory Kirkland; Treasurer:  Pauline Garrett; Secretary:  Karen Zeiset; and Directors, Brad Duvall and David Hall Jr.

The program  was delivered by Dr. Mari Fagin with Oklahoma Human Rights Commission.  

She came to USAO in 1976.  In the last 35 years have seen only a continual improvements for the Liberal Arts School.  

She talked a great deal about the successes of USAO and her exposure to Rotary and Rotary Ideals by Dr. Trout. 

She addressed the club about the Good, Bad, and Ugly of Oklahoma in regards to Human Rights Work.  She shared her reaction to hearing a woman make the statement that she wished we could go back to the way the world use to be.  Dr. Fagin saw that would mean go back to slavery, go back to the Jim Crow laws, go back to women with no to little rights.  She saw this is a bad idea but pointed out how far we have come in human rights.  

In 1963 Oklahoma took a major step by forming the Oklahoma Human Rights Commission.  Unfortunately, due to economic times and cutbacks, the commission will be terminated in 2012.  The work of the commission will be absorbed into other areas of the state government.
