3-29-2012 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha

The March 29, 2012 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and a song.

Guests included Amanda Mullins, a new assistant D.A. and Charles Bawden, a visiting Rotarian from Colorado.

Mark Tibbetts reminded members about the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale that runs through Sunday, April 1.

Cody White updated the club about the recents PETS training he attended.

President Michael Oberlender said the District spring conferenced is April 13-14 in Weatherford. He encouraged members to consider attending.

Michael reported than about 20 students had applied for the annual Dan Proctor scholarship.

Brad Duvall, head of the Rotary Run fundraising committee, encouraged Rotarians to consider the various levels of giving to support the May 19 run.

Rotarian of the Day was Phillip Wint, who was sick. President Michael introduced our guest speaker, Kay Wint, Phillip's wife.

Kay is an attorney who is the former owner of one of Hollywood's most famous landmarks, The Palace Theatre near Hollywood & Vine.

The Theatre first opened in 1920, the first of many theatres in what would become the Hollywood theatre district.

Through the years, the theatre has hosted many concerts, television shows and has been the site for several movie sets. Among those performing at the venue were the Beatles and Judy Garland.

Kay bought the building out of bankruptcy in 1990 and refurbished it to its former glory.

She ran nine different businesses out of the building, that is used for special events, after move premieres, concerts, dancing and dining.

During her time in Hollywood, Kay served on the the committee that decided what celebrities got stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She sold the 44,000 sq feet facility in 2002 and has since moved to Chickasha.
