Kathy King of Early Settlement Mediation was guest speaker at the 4-18-2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha.
The April 18, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer and pledge. President Cody waved off the song.
Guests included Tyler Perryman and Jeff McVey.
Prayer concerns include Nadine Allen, Caleb Brauer, Jerry Mottinger, Ann Manchester and Bill and Janice McVey.
President Cody White reminded us that we are hosting a Rotary Exchange Team from Italy beginning Saturday through Wednesday morning. Volunteers are still needed to host meals for the visitors who will tour several Chickasha institutions, including USAO where they will be staying, and attend a basketball game. Cody said it would be nice if we had a group to greet the visitors when they arrive at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Alumni House.
There was a Rotary Run meeting after the meeting. The run is May 18.
Greg Elliott and Elmer Kuntz attended a District Assembly Saturday for new officers. It was held at USAO.
Judge Richard Van Dyck was Rotarian of the Day. He introduced Kathy King, director of the Central Region of Early Settlement Mediation.
Kathy said death and taxes are not the only certainties in life. Conflict is inevitable, she said.
Typical conflicts include landlord-tenant, business-consumer, neighbors, family members and employer-employee.
Early Settlement has trained volunteers who help mediate disputes, keeping the cases off crowded court dockets.
King said mediation is effective because it is informal, low or no cost, empowering and offers a venue for constructive dialog.
Early Settlement was created under the Oklahoma Dispute Resolution Act about 30 years ago.
She said volunteers are needed to act as mediators. Another training class is set for May 23-24 in Chickasha. Volunteers are asked to commit to work at least 20 hours within a two-year period.
The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
