OSU Extension Ag Educator Brooke Bradbury was our guest speaker. She talked about the proper way to water your lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees in these drought conditions.
She said proper irrigation is an art. You have to tailor your approach to your particular lawn.
Plants require a lot of water. There are no straight forward answers on when to water or how much to water.
Bradbury said there are several things to consider when watering, including the soil type, the grass species and weather conditions.
She said to remember that drought tolerant doesn't mean a plant doesn't need water.
Bradbury said it was best to water deeper and frequently. She said most lawns require 1 to 1.5 inches of water that will wet the soil 4-6 inches every 5 to 7 days during the growing season. On lawns it is best to use a sprinkler but for shrubs it is best to use drip irrigation or soaker hose.
